Angry Birds for the iPhone & iPod Touch
The animosity between pigs and birds is something that needs not be mentioned here. If I gained any knowledge during history class in high school, it’s that our great country that we live in lies on the shattered ruins of The Great Egg Theft of 1891.
To commemorate these events, Rovio and Clickgamer.com have put together a simulator for the iPhone that brings the player beak to snout in an attempt to recapture the great struggle – Angry Birds.
The setup for the game couldn’t be easier. On the left, you have a slingshot and a queue of birds. On the right, you have a group of pigs protected by structures of various materials. Wood breaks easier than ice, which breaks easier than stone. Each structure is put together like a matchstick house, just begging to be pummelled by the oncoming avian apocalypse.
Each bird has a unique attribute activated by tapping the screen as it careens towards the structure, ranging from the grey ones that split into 3 when tapped, to the big black one, that detonates after bludgeoning a support structure.
This formula continues for 63 levels, and never once gets repetitive or tiresome. As you get further in the game, no longer can you get away with just randomly tossing these creatures at the walls, as the levels are designed to mimic a Rube Goldberg machine.
To add replay value to the game, the developers have added challenges to each level. Your performance is ranked with one, two, or three stars, depending on how many birds it took for you to destroy the pigs, and also how much structural damage you caused.
The colourful graphics, silky smooth gameplay and destructive physics make this one of my current favourite iPhone games. In my travels, every person who has played this game on my iPhone has turned around and purchased it for their own device.
I strongly hope this game picks up speed so the developers will have the funds to create more levels, which I guarantee everyone will gladly pay for.
If you ever had the urge to elbow drop a sand castle on the beach, drop kick someone’s popsicle stick house or uppercut a large LEGO diorama, then Angry Birds is the game for you.
