What up, crumbcakes? I hear that some of you buttholes need some advice on what to look out for this summer, music-wise! Look no further. Well, look as far as the end of this post, smart-ass, but then, look no further…
AVAILABLE NOW
The Black Keys / ‘Brothers’ (Everything Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney touch turns to gold, sounds like platinum, and hits like titanium.)
Broken Bells / ‘Broken Bells’ (I asked Piggy Seldon to sell this album in two words. “Danger. Mouse.” That’ll do, Pig.)
The Dead Weather / ‘Sea of Cowards’ (see Black Keys’ explanation, swap Dan and Pat for Jack White.)
Gil Scott-Heron / ‘I’m New Here’ (Old man strength! Be sure to also check the two unreleased remixes of New York Is Killing Me, one featuring NaS, the other, Mos Def.)
Jack Splash / ‘King of the Beats, Vol. 1’ (It’s FREE, so you can’t afford not to grab this! Need more convincing? Here’s a sample lyric: “You special, like retarded-special…”)
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings/ ‘I Learned The Hard Way’ (Always awesome. And she’s coming to Vancouver! Buy your tickets here.)
JUNE 8
‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (OST)’ – Just kidding. Sort of. DON’T support this bullshit twink-bot franchise by buying the soundtrack. DO steal your kid sister’s copy, steal tracks 7-9, 11 and 12, featuring The Black Keys, The Dead Weather, Beck & Bat For Lashes, UNKLE, and Eastern Conference Champions, respectively. DO question why some of your favourite artists are involved with such sparkling, vaginal nonsense while you listen. Oh, and scratch the disc before you put it back.
JUNE 15
Drake / ‘Thank Me Later’ – This album leaked early and…ehhhh…Drake’s dope, but this album’s mostly shake. Just cop copies of Thank Me Now, the outtake One Man Show, and the single, Over, and bounce. If you’re really craving more, just go back and listen to Forever again. Unless you’re giving your flower away, ladies. Then this is perfect!
JUNE 22
Eminem / ‘Recovery’ – Yeah, yeah. Not Afraid’s not that great. You can’t judge a book by it’s cover, and I don’t judge an album by the single. Listen to this and tell me you’re not excited to hear MCing like that. The first leak off the album, with Pink of all people on the hook, and a weird, grindy, rocked out beat by DJ Khalil (who also produced THIS!), is crazy. I may not always love his hooks or all of his ideas, but as soon as Em hits the open road of 16 bars of verse, I get got. [UPDATE: Red. Fucking. Alert. 'Recovery' just leaked. The album in it's entirety. As I was posting this. The music industry is doomed...]
The Roots / ‘How I Got Over’ – The Roots are always solid. Consistent. Reliable. I can’t say I ever love entire albums of theirs. Honestly, I’m more anxious for Black Thought’s collaboration with Danger Mouse, ‘Dangerous Thoughts.’ I don’t know. Maybe I was just underwhelmed by the single. I was more impressed by the unaired performance of Straight Outta Compton on Jimmy Fallon with Ice Cube. Black Thought does pretty great impressions/renditions of Ren and Eazy’s verses. Most impressive was him coming up with edits and substitutes for the inhuman amount of cussing on the fly. Black Thought’s rad…
Now get outta here! Come back next week, if you must. We’ll pick up at the start of July. Until then, stay off the f@¢#in’ flowers!
As you were,
– Nuv
