The Jolly Gamesman Vol. 27

Have you ever found yourself needing to access a file, start a torrent or make sure you closed websites that you wouldn’t want a family member to see?  Have you ever found yourself needing to do this while somewhere inconvenient and at some distance away from home?

iTeleport is here to help.

During my time with iTeleport, I found I used it most on my local network. Living in a three story townhouse, running up stairs every time I want to start a download, check programs that are running or do some accounting in Quicken got a little annoying. Off-site I’ve used my iPhone’s 3G connection to start some downloads, and install updates that I wouldn’t want to wait until I got home to initiate. The few times I’ve wanted to get access to files that are on my home computer was  a snap as I can drag and drop into iDisk or Dropbox thus making them available anywhere.

Setup on a Mac and a PC is a breeze. The instructions provided are detailed enough so even the most novice computer user can do it. While traditionally anything network related when not on your own router can be a pain, iTeleport authenticates by way of your GMail account, thus removing the need for proxy’s and port forwarding.

By no means is this a replacement for a computer in front of you. The refresh rate is not real time, there is no audio, and on an off-site network, the responsiveness of your input drops depending on your available bandwidth and latency.

One of the cool features of iTeleport is its ability to let you control your Mac using a touch interface rather than a virtual mouse. It takes a little bit to get used to, but combining it with the pinch and zoom of the iPad, it controls very well.

While the price is a bit steep in comparison to other Apps on the iPad and iPhone, there seems to be a lot under the hood making it work. Many similar applications exist, but are limited to local networks and confusing network configurations. Being able to connect and control your computer on any network local or off site combined with this being a universal app makes the price of admittance worth every penny.
